The Epic Collegiate Heart of Buckeye Nation, Ohio Stadium & Academic Life
The University District is the vibrant, collegiate, and intellectual heartbeat of Columbus, centered around the sprawling main campus of The Ohio State University (OSU)βone of the largest and most prestigious public research universities in the world. Home to over 66,000 students and 30,000 faculty and staff, the district is energized by young intellectual ambition and fierce Buckeye athletic pride.
Anchoring the riverbank is the cathedral of college football: historic Ohio Stadium, known affectionately worldwide as 'The Horseshoe.' Seating over 102,000 fans, the 1922 stadium rocks with deafening choruses of 'Hang On Sloopy' on autumn Saturdays.
Across the lush, shaded lawns of The Oval and Mirror Lake sits the Wexner Center for the Artsβan internationally renowned multidisciplinary laboratory for contemporary art housed in Peter Eisenman's groundbreaking deconstructivist building. Lined with legendary student watering holes, international street food, and independent bookshops along High Street, the University District is electric day and night.

From Morrill Land-Grant College to Global Higher Education Giant
Founded in 1870 as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College under President Abraham Lincoln's Morrill Land-Grant Act, the university opened in 1873 with 24 students on the former farm of Neil family. In 1878, it was officially renamed The Ohio State University.
In 1922, university architect Howard Dwight Smith designed the monumental rotunda and double-deck horseshoe of Ohio Stadium, built with private donations. In 1989, the opening of Leslie Wexner's contemporary art center cemented OSU as a global leader in contemporary art, engineering, and medical research.
