Columbus's Vibrant Arts Epicenter, Lit Steel Arches & Culinary Runway
The Short North Arts District is the pulsating cultural, creative, and nightlife corridor of Columbus, Ohio. Stretching along North High Street between Downtown and The Ohio State University campus, the district is famously heralded by 17 illuminated steel arches that span the street—a modern tribute to Columbus's 19th-century identity as 'Arch City.'
Often hailed as the 'art and soul of Columbus,' the Short North is home to the legendary Gallery Hop, held on the first Saturday of every month since 1984. During this celebrated evening, thousands of art lovers, collectors, and revelers spill into open art galleries, indie fashion boutiques, and street performer circles.
Lined with premier chef-driven dining rooms by Cameron Mitchell and independent culinary pioneers, bespoke craft cocktail dens, rooftop terraces, and artisan coffee roasters, the Short North stands as one of the most vibrant urban arts districts in the nation.

From 'Short North' Neglect to America's Pioneer Arts Revival
In the late 19th century, Columbus erected wooden arches over High Street to light the road and power electric streetcars. By the mid-20th century, the strip between downtown and campus had fallen into neglect and was dubbed the 'Short North' by local police because it fell just 'short' of downtown.
In the early 1980s, adventurous artists, gallery owners, and LGBTQ+ pioneers saw the potential in cheap commercial rent and beautiful turn-of-the-century brick storefronts. In 1984, they launched the first Gallery Hop. In 2002, the iconic steel arches were recreated, completing one of the most celebrated arts-driven urban revivals in America.
